Week 10 — Inclusion & Belonging (Unit 2 Capstone + Mid-Semester)
Unit 2: Lead With Others • Domain II
Essential Question: How do I make space for everyone — not just the people like me?
Key Performance: Inclusion Audit of our class + Mid-Semester Portfolio Checkpoint.
Day 1 — Belonging vs Fitting In
Objective: SWBAT distinguish belonging (being known) from fitting in (being like).
Do-Now (5): "A place I belonged. A place I had to fit in. Which felt better, and why?" • Circle (5): Single word. • Mini-Lesson (10): Brown frame: belonging requires authenticity. • Practice (25): Pair story exchange + class word-cloud of "what belonging looks like in a classroom." • Close (5): "One thing that helps me belong here is ___."
Day 2 — Identify the Edges
Objective: SWBAT identify who in a group is on the edge and one concrete inclusion move.
Do-Now (5): "Think of a group you're in. Who's at the center? Who's at the edge?" (Don't name.) • Circle (5): Roses/thorns. • Mini-Lesson (10): 5 inclusion moves: name use, invitation, amplification, credit, follow-up. • Practice (25): Each student commits to one move they'll do today in another class; logs it. • Close (5): Commitment journaled.
Day 3 — Inclusion Audit Design
Objective: SWBAT design a 5-question inclusion audit for our own class.
Do-Now (5): "If a new student walked into our class on Monday, what would they notice first?" • Circle (5): Check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): Survey design basics — open vs Likert; anonymity. • Practice (25): Small groups draft surveys; class votes top 5 questions; teacher digitizes. • Close (5): Submit anonymously now.
Day 4 — Read the Data, Decide What to Change
Objective: SWBAT analyze class data and propose 2 changes to norms/practices.
Do-Now (5): Look at anonymized results (teacher prepped). React in journal. • Circle (5): Brave check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): Data ≠ verdict; data = invitation. • Practice (25): Small-group analysis → proposals → whole-class consensus on 2 changes. Update the Class Compact. • Close (5): Sign updated compact.
Day 5 — Friday Circle + Mid-Semester Checkpoint
Do-Now (5): Review your Week-1 RLP self-rating. Mid-semester re-rate. • Circle (25): Mid-semester closing circle — "What I would tell Week-1 me." • Practice (15): Portfolio mid-checkpoint submission + family share-out video (5 min, recorded today or by Sunday). • Close (5): Leader of the Week + Unit 3 preview.
Assessment
- Mid-Semester Self-Rating (RLP all 6 competencies, with evidence).
- Family Share-Out video (3–5 min).
- Inclusion Audit deliverable (group artifact + 2 adopted changes).
Differentiation
ML/EL — bilingual surveys; recorded family share-out in home language welcomed.
Sub Plan
Day 3 survey design works as a sub day.
Stretch & Swap
Run the Inclusion Audit school-wide as a Year-2 stretch project; bring data to admin.
