Week 09 — Conflict & Repair

Unit 2: Lead With Others • Domain II
Essential Question: What do I do when it's hard between me and someone else?
Key Performance: Conflict role-play assessment using a 4-step repair protocol.

Day 1 — Conflict Styles

Objective: SWBAT identify their default conflict style (avoid, accommodate, compete, compromise, collaborate).
Do-Now (5): "Last time I disagreed with someone, I ___." • Circle (5): Single word. • Mini-Lesson (10): Thomas-Kilmann 5 styles (in plain English). Each has a place. • Practice (25): Self-quiz → pair share → 4-corner labeling exercise. • Close (5): "My default is ___; the cost of that default is ___."

Day 2 — Heat vs Light

Objective: SWBAT name body cues of escalation and one regulation strategy.
Do-Now (5): "What does my body do when I'm angry?" • Circle (5): Roses/thorns (pass-friendly). • Mini-Lesson (10): Fight/flight/freeze/fawn basics + 4-7-8 breath. • Practice (25): Body-cue map; 3-min guided breath; pair share regulation plan. • Close (5): "Before I respond, I will ___."

Day 3 — The 4-Step Repair Protocol

Objective: SWBAT use What happened? / Who was affected? / What do you need? / What will you do differently?
Do-Now (5): "A repair I've witnessed (or wished for)." • Circle (5): Check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): Restorative repair script. • Practice (25): Pairs walk through a low-stakes scenario (e.g., missed group meeting). • Close (5): Exit: "The hardest step for me is ___."

Day 4 — Conflict Role-Play Assessment

Objective: SWBAT navigate a moderate-stakes conflict in front of one observer using the repair protocol.
Do-Now (5): Pick a scenario card. • Circle (5): Brave check-in. • Mini-Lesson (5): Rubric walk-through. • Practice (30): Triads — A & B run scenario; C scores; debrief. Two rotations. • Close (5): Self-rate.

Day 5 — Friday Circle: Repair in the Real

Do-Now (5): Write one tiny repair you owe (don't name names). • Circle (25): Friday Circle + round: "A repair I want to make this weekend." (Pass-friendly.) • Practice (15): Portfolio + journal: plan for repair, with follow-up date. • Close (5): Leader of the Week.

Assessment

4-pt rubric on role-play: Regulation • Use of 4 questions • Listening to the other • Concrete next step.

Differentiation

Heavy pass-friendly week. Counselor on standby. Students can submit written role-play if oral feels unsafe.

Sub Plan

Do not run Day 4 with a sub. Swap Day 1 self-quiz to Day 4 if needed.

Stretch & Swap

Partner with restorative justice coordinator; bring real (anonymized) campus scenarios with permission.

Safety Note

Watch for students whose conflict examples surface abuse, harassment, or self-harm — pull aside privately and follow mandated reporting protocol.
