Week 16 — Community Needs & Assets
Unit 4: Lead in Community • Domain IV
Essential Question: What does our community actually need — and what assets do we already have?
Key Performance: Asset Map + 2 stakeholder interviews per team.
Day 1 — Needs vs Assets
Objective: SWBAT articulate the difference between a deficit lens and an asset lens.
Do-Now (5): "Describe Roseville to someone who has never been here." • Circle (5): Single word. • Mini-Lesson (10): Asset-Based Community Development basics — every community has gifts; start there. • Practice (25): Pair brainstorm — 10 deficits vs 10 assets of our school/community. Notice the energy difference. • Close (5): "An asset I overlooked is ___."
Day 2 — Asset Mapping
Objective: SWBAT map assets across 6 categories (people, places, institutions, associations, economic, cultural).
Do-Now (5): "Who in your life is a quiet asset?" • Circle (5): Roses/thorns. • Mini-Lesson (10): 6 categories with examples specific to Roseville. • Practice (25): Teams map their capstone's community on chart paper. • Close (5): Identify 3 assets to leverage.
Day 3 — Stakeholder Interview Design
Objective: SWBAT design a 5-question, 15-minute stakeholder interview.
Do-Now (5): "What's a question you wish someone would ask you?" • Circle (5): Check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): Interview craft — open questions, follow-ups, silence, gratitude. • Practice (25): Teams draft interview guides; pair-test on each other; revise. • Close (5): Schedule 2 interviews to complete by Day 1 next week.
Day 4 — Interview Mock + Logistics
Objective: SWBAT conduct a mock interview and refine.
Do-Now (5): Confirm interview slots. • Circle (5): Check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): Logistics — confirm, show up early, take notes, thank-you within 24 hours. • Practice (30): Cross-team mock interviews (one team plays stakeholder); feedback. • Close (5): Final logistics confirmed.
Day 5 — Friday Circle: Whose Voice Are We Missing?
Do-Now (5): "Whose voice are we not hearing in our capstone?" • Circle (25): Friday Circle + round on the question. • Practice (15): Update asset map + identify one missing voice to add by Week 17. • Close (5): Leader of the Week.
Assessment
4-pt rubric: Asset map richness • Interview question quality • 2 interviews scheduled with confirmed times • Missing-voice analysis.
Differentiation
ML/EL — interview in home language welcome and encouraged when stakeholder shares it. Stretch — students may interview an elected official or department head.
