Week 13 — Meetings & Facilitation
Unit 3: Lead Teams & Projects • Domain III
Essential Question: How do I run a meeting that people actually want to attend?
Key Performance: Facilitate a 15-minute real team meeting; receive structured feedback.
Day 1 — Why Most Meetings Fail
Objective: SWBAT name the 4 most common meeting failure modes (no agenda, no purpose, no facilitation, no decision).
Do-Now (5): "Worst meeting I've ever been in. Why?" • Circle (5): Single word. • Mini-Lesson (10): 4 failure modes + the antidote = PADD (Purpose, Agenda, Decision, Documentation). • Practice (25): In pairs, redesign a "bad" meeting using PADD. • Close (5): Exit: "The failure mode I'll fix is ___."
Day 2 — Agenda Craft
Objective: SWBAT build an agenda with time-boxed items and decision types.
Do-Now (5): Read a sample bad agenda; mark it up. • Circle (5): Roses/thorns. • Mini-Lesson (10): Agenda anatomy — outcome, owner, time, decision type (inform/discuss/decide). • Practice (25): Teams build an agenda for their upcoming real meeting. • Close (5): Send to teacher for review.
Day 3 — Facilitator Moves
Objective: SWBAT use 5 facilitator moves (round-robin, parking-lot, stack, time-check, summarize).
Do-Now (5): "If I'm facilitating and one person dominates, what do I do?" • Circle (5): Check-in. • Mini-Lesson (10): 5 moves modeled live. Teacher demos each. • Practice (25): Fishbowl — one team holds a 7-min mock meeting; outer ring scores facilitator moves. Two rounds. • Close (5): "The move I'll use is ___."
Day 4 — Facilitate It (Key Performance)
Objective: SWBAT facilitate a 15-min real team meeting and receive feedback.
Do-Now (5): Final agenda check. • Circle (5): Brave check-in. • Practice (40): Teams hold parallel 15-min meetings on real capstone topic; one observer per team scores with rubric. Debrief 5 min in team. • Close (5): Self-rate.
Day 5 — Friday Circle: What I Notice About Power
Do-Now (5): "How did I use power as a facilitator?" • Circle (25): Friday Circle + round: "Something I noticed about who got airtime this week." • Practice (15): Portfolio: agenda + meeting notes + observer rubric + reflection. • Close (5): Leader of the Week.
Assessment
4-pt facilitation rubric: Agenda • 5 moves used • Airtime equity • Decision/documentation clarity.
Differentiation
ML/EL — co-facilitate first time; sentence-frame cards for transitions. Stretch — students facilitate a club meeting outside of class for bonus.
Sub Plan
Day 1 redesign-a-bad-meeting works as a sub day.
Stretch & Swap
Invite admin to be a "guest attendee" at one team's meeting Day 4 and give the student facilitator feedback.
